The published range

Angi, How Much Does Mold Remediation Cost? prints a range of $500–$3,000 for mold remediation in a basement location. The same guide gives $2,369 as the national average for a mold job of any kind and $1,223–$3,757 as the typical span, so the basement range starts $723 below the typical low end and reaches inside the typical span.

Ranked by the midpoint of each published range ($1,750 here), the basement comes 5th of the 7 locations in the guide. Attic sits just above it and Crawl space just below. The high end is 6 times the low end, a wide spread: the size of the affected area decides where a job lands.

The guide also prints a per-square-foot rate of $10 to $25. Arithmetic on that rate, not a published figure: at the EPA's 10 sq ft homeowner line the rate works out to $100–$250, and at the 100 sq ft line where EPA moves from limited to full containment it is $1,000–$2,500. Read the other way, the basement range lines up with roughly 20 to 300 sq ft of affected surface at that rate, spanning EPA's size categories.

Basement growth is the case where water and mold costs meet most often: the same guide set prices a flooded basement separately, and a wet basement that is not dried becomes a mold job.

Mold follows water. EPA's guidance is “It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.” (U.S. EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home) The water damage guide prices the related basement work at $500–$2,800, overlapping the mold range.

Size, testing and licensing

EPA sorts mold cleanup by the area affected: small under 10 sq ft, medium from 10 to 100 sq ft with limited containment, large above 100 sq ft with full containment. On testing, EPA says “In most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary.” (U.S. EPA, A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home). In the states that license mold work, a hired company needs a license above a set size or value; see mold licensing by state.
